Charles Muratori

Biography

Carlo Muratori is among the most authoritative and historic Sicilian singer-songwriters. His approach to traditional music set a precedent in Sicily and outside the island, and was a reference model for the folk music scene from the seventies onwards. During his forty-year artistic career he has skilfully alternated his commitment to the recovery of ancient songs of oral tradition with the composition of new songs. His discography is rich in this precious work, counting a dozen albums. With a humanistic background, he studied classical guitar, harmony, composition and choir conducting. In the seventies he collaborated for a long time with the ethnologist Antonino Uccello in the cataloging of his Casa di lui Museum of Palazzolo Acreide. In 1977 he formed I CÍLLIRI, a folk-revival musical group, taking care of the research and arrangements of the songs. In 1987 he began his solo career which ranges across various fields of art and culture. In 1994 he signed a recording contract with CGD Warner with which he released CANTI E INCANTI in '94 and STELLA MARIS in '96. He collaborated with the poet Ignazio Buttitta and the unforgettable Sicilian folk-singer Rosa Balistreri. An intense concert activity sees him involved in the billboards of the most important national and international festivals.

His live performances are real happenings, where his extraordinary communication skills and his undoubted charisma transform his concerts into an exciting experience for the audience. A great storyteller and excellent musician and singer, between the performances of his songs, Muratori recites verses, tells stories, moves and provokes the audience with quotes and reflections on the history and culture of his people. From this strong bond with the people and the territory of his island came his tireless commitment as an organizer of events and music reviews. Activities that he has always personalized with the research and identification of sites and themes highly representative of Sicilian history and tradition. In this role as a cultural promoter, it is worth mentioning his contribution as a columnist for some regional newspapers and as founder and director of the bimonthly Sicilian art, culture and identity magazine Le Fate.

In 2007 he wrote "'Mpare", the opening song of the film L'uomo di Vetro by Stefano Incerti, (see video) produced by Rai Cinema and Red Film, in competition at the Taormina Film Fest; in the same year he was present in the soundtrack of the film Liscio by Claudio Antonini with Laura Morante, awarded at the Rome Film Fest; he is the author of the lyrics of the song LUNE sung by Morante in this film (see video). For this song he received a nomination for the Nastri D'argento for cinema in the best original song for cinema section.

A record release is also expected from this concert.
